The University of Jos community today gathered in celebration as the ACReSAL Project commissioned a solar-powered borehole designed to provide clean water for domestic use and support irrigation farming in the university community.

For many years, access to reliable water had remained a major challenge for both staff and students, especially during the dry season when they frequently trekked long distances in search of water for domestic use and crop production.

The commissioning of the solar-powered borehole marks a significant turning point for the university community. Powered entirely by renewable energy, the facility is expected to provide a sustainable source of water throughout the year, improving livelihoods and enhancing agricultural productivity.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the Plateau State ACReSAL Project Coordinator, Dr. Garba Gowon Gonkol, described the initiative as part of ongoing efforts to build climate resilience and improve the quality of life of communities. He noted that access to clean water is critical for both household consumption and agricultural activities, particularly in areas affected by climate change and environmental degradation.

Expressing gratitude for the intervention, the Acting Director of the University of Jos Advancement Office, Professor Sarah Lwahas described the project as a life-changing development and appealed for greater collaboration between the University and the ACReSAL Project.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Tanko Ishaya, who was represented at the occasion by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Pic Charles Onwochei, appreciated the ACReSAL Project for its support to the University. He stated that the project has brought renewed hope to the University community and will significantly improve access to water for both domestic and agricultural purposes.

The occasion was attended by lecturers, staff, students, and other members of the University community, who commended the Plateau State ACReSAL Project for its commitment to sustainable development and improving the welfare of communities across the state.
